A third generation member of the internationally acclaimed Dye family of golf course designers, Matt Dye followed in the family tradition established by his grandfather Paul, his late father Roy and his legendary uncle, Pete Dye. Starting in 1989 along with Perry Dye and Dye Designs, he designed, shaped and constructed courses all over the world, including Ibaraki, Japan; Pattaya, Thailand; and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Closer to home, Matt’s name is proudly associated with such Dye courses as Desert Pines Golf Course, Las Vegas Paiute Resort and Royal Links Golf Club, all in Las Vegas, Nevada; The Promontory in Park City, Utah; Sweetbrier Golf Club in Danville, Kentucky; and Trump National Golf Club (originally Ocean Trails Golf Club) in Los Angeles, California.
Since starting his own design business in 2002, Matt has emerged to take center stage with his own golf course designs. Matt’s first solo design project took him to the North Island of New Zealand, where he re-opened the Carrington Club in 2003. It was a renovation, but the changes were so far reaching that today the course bears Matt’s name as the designer of recorder. Offers came in quickly after Carrington’s success. Matt designed El Rio Country Club near Laughlin, Nevada, and the Links at Sleepy Ridge in Orem, Utah, simultaneously, along with the Ledges in St. George, Utah, and Dos Lagos Golf Club in Corona, California, shortly thereafter. Matt is currently working on two new designs in Utah and California, and has been contacted by developers as far afield as China and Costa Rica.
Matt gives the most attention to his greens. He likes to build them with lots of undulation and asserts that many current golf course developments, by gunning the Stimpmeter readings over 10, sometimes prevent architects from designing greens with real character. Plus, Matt points out, “fast greens are more disease prone and they are less suitable for 80 percent of golfers, anyway.” This touches on Matt’s chief design priorities: cost, playability and strategy. Above all, Matt Dye wants people to be able to afford a round of golf, enjoy it, play quickly and come back.
Over the last 17 years, Matt Dye has established himself on the list of top golf course designers worldwide. He is highly respected, not only as designer, but as a businessman with the highest regard for his client’s needs. He has an impeccable reputation with all who work for him and with him. His success can be attributed to his innate design talent and his excellent business sense.
